Xi jin ping is currently china’s leader for most aspects. He holds the title of president, Chairman of China’s Central Military Commission and General Secretary he is the chief of China’s Communist Party. At a congress meeting the possibility of him remaining the president for the rest of his life. England’s queen passed away however China’s king is on the journey to receive his crown.
How did Xi Jin Ping become the supreme leader?
Xi jin ping started off as a founding father of communism and a former vice-premier. He was the son of one of the elite senior officials. He did not shadow his fathers figure throughout his career though, his fathers authority took a dark turn when he was imprisoned in 1962. Mr Xi’s father sparked violent attacks across the country due to fear of rebellion in party ranks. According to a new york times report the first daughter of Xi Zhongxun (Xi Jinping’s father) took her own look due to duress from persecution due to her fathers repute. Despite having a network in the communist party xi jin ping struggled to climb up the ladder and even getting into the party itself. He tried multiple times and was rebuffed due to his fathers standing. After much persistence he made it by starting in the hebei province and eventually rising up by taking over more territory.
The reason he gained a reputation was due to the summer olympics in beijing, it was china’s chance to prove they were worthy of a second chance. It was a second chance to maintain their international relations after the many mass killings as a consequence of anti communist protests. Mr Xi was put in charge of these games and soon was elected president after gaining much more public appearance.
How did china remove their two term limit on presidency?
Constitutional changes were passed at the annual sitting of the parliament, the national people’s congress. Chinas two term limit started in the 1990s, however Mr Xi who would have had to step down in 2023 defied the tradition by presenting himself as more than worthy. 2 out of 2964 delegates voted against the change, which is overwhelmingly in favor of the commmunist leader.
What does this removal mean for china?
Zero covid policy
The zero covid policy is a policy put in place by the chinese government and enforced by xi jin ping which aims to evade covid and not work towards living with it. During the march 2022 respike of covid in multiple cities through china, they had intensive quarantines and testing everyday in communities. Traveling is strictly banned and families are still separated as China has made it living hell to try and enter the country. Yet even after all the pressure from the societal and economic pressure the government refuses to change or improve their policies. Apparently what miraculously worked for them in 2020 will work again. The vaccinations are also limited to nationals even though foreign vaccines prove to have stronger effects. China’s government has always restricted foreign goods and services like google but vaccinations are unethical even for their extremist views. The people of china are living in a social outcast bubble with no way out. The only hopes that were left for them was the changing of the policies, however the confirmation of the constitutional change condemned them to these strict policies until at least Mr Xi’s death
China’s foreign firms and schools running out of expats
Prior to the pandemic china had many overseas executives who used to work under companies, however after the strict zero covid policies introduced in 2020 the executives have soon left to pursue more hopeful and prosperous job opportunities. The large involuntary turnover of staff occurred due to the near total ban of foreign nationals entering the country in march 2020 as they focused on preventing i,ported infections. Ironic as these “infections’ ‘ (covid) is native to their country. Working or studying in China waa made unreasonably difficult as student or work visas were suspended and work permits were near impossible to obtain. Smart Shanghai estimates almost 100,000 foreigners are waiting for permission to return to china. Foreign staff have irreplicable skills like command over language and network with international sales executives. The lack of this finite resource is taking a toll on the Chinese economy. Even now the china’s ministry of finance abruptly announced the extension of tax for foriegn workers until the end of 2023. What is China’s game plan? To drive the foreigners away? To create strictly national monopolies?
Many more restrictions are predicted to come especially with the reaffirming of xi jin pings reign. Will this be the downfall of the chinese empire or the rise?
