WHY IS EVERYONE TALKING ABOUT “SQUID GAME”

Date:

You must be getting many posts about Squid Game on your google feed or the trending google searches. What’s the hype about? Is it worth it? Read on cause I’ll be answering many of your questions through this article.

Mild spoilers ahead!

 THE PLOT

“After a failed business venture, the debt-ridden chauffeur Seong Gi Hun lives his life gambling away the money he mooches off his elderly mother while failing to provide for her and his estranged daughter. When his life finally hits rock bottom, he receives an irresistible offer promising him a ₩45.6 billion prize in exchange for winning traditional Korean children’s games against 455 other players, among them his childhood friend Cho Sang Woo. Commencing the games, the participants soon learn of the deadly consequences that come with losing.”

Source- Mydramalist

I must say, there surely are deadly consequences if you don’t win, as you fall into your death.

UNIQUE CONCEPT

The writer, Hwang Dong-hyuk, cleverly took children’s games and turned them into the character’s worst nightmare. Some of the most widespread and innocuous children’s games in the 1970s and 1980’s South Korea (played in the alleys) get reinvented (modern-day) as a perplexing survival game with a 45.6 billion won cash prize for the winner. There’s a catch, however: losers must pay… with their lives!

THE FEELS

The thrill, watching everyone trying to guess what the next game was.

The suspense, watching people, not sleeping cause they may get attacked by the fellow players. (PLS: The more players got reduced, the more money was added)

The horror, watching people fall to their death and them begging to exit the game and spare their life

The tearjerking moments of our favorite characters being killed (Ali, Sae- Byeok, and Ji- Yeong)

And the plot twist it gives us at the end 20 minutes. (Won’t spoil it for you)

THE LESSON LEARNT

1. Money is essential, but money isn’t happiness. (Even after winning the money, the male lead didn’t use it for one year as he was guilt-ridden)

2. Don’t lose hope in humanity, but be careful of who you trust. (Ali trusted Sang-woo, but got manipulated and was betrayed by the one person who he trusted)

That’s it, be sure to binge-watch ‘Squid Game’ on NETFLIX!!
