Japan is a country that is home to copious amounts of nightmarish, unearthly, and spine-chilling mythical stories and legends. A few of the most famous urban legends like Noppera-bō – Japanese Faceless Ghost, Hanako San – Japanese Bloody Mary, Tomino’s Hell – The Cursed Japanese Poem, Jikininki – Japanese Human Eating Ghost gives an abundant amount of goosebumps to the reader or listener. And today, we are about to talk in detail about one such spine-chilling story!
Such stories and legends might be just a part of mythologies or beliefs. But The Kisaragi Station story is an actual incident that occurred on 1st January 2004.
Hasumi, a woman was on a train heading to her workplace, was the only one awake in the carriage with the other five passengers asleep.
Something seemed off.
What was she feeling? Why was she startled and confused?
Let’s dive into her situation at that very moment to experience the horrors she encountered.
WHAT HAPPENED
Hasumi, at midnight, posts in the middle of a thread called “Post About Strange Occurrences Around You: Thread 26.” on 2channel. She had been anonymous at first but started attaching her name later as she shared her frightful situation during the ride.
Hasumi, on the textboard, asks the users in the thread if she can post her situation right now as she is confused and has no idea whether it is her imagination or something else.
The anonymous users showed interest in helping her figure out what was going on.
HER HAUNTING POSTS
Hasumi posts:
“I have been riding a certain train for a while, but something seems off.
I always take this train to work. But it hasn’t stopped at any stations for the past twenty minutes or so. It usually takes only five minutes, seven or eight at worst. Oh, and there are five other passengers, but they’re all sleeping.”
The users ask if she has taken the express train by mistake. Hasumi is sure she is on the right train, so she assumes that she might have missed her stop and decides to wait for a little longer,
“…If anything else strange occurs, I might bring it up here.”
she posts.
The users suggest she try going to the end of the carriage to see the conductor.
The train shows no signs of stopping, and as the users suggest, she decides to take a look at the driver’s carriage. She finds out blinds are covering the window, and she is unable to see the conductor or the driver. She also lets the users know that the route is a private railway in Shizuoka. She knocked on the window, but nobody answered.
A user then asks if she can see out the window and let them know the names of the stations she is passing by.
To which she replies,
“We came out of a tunnel, so we’re dropping speed slightly.
There usually aren’t any tunnels, though… It’s a train from Shin-Hamamatsu.”
It looks like we’re finally stopping at a station.“
THE TRAIN FINALLY STOPS
Moments later, the train finally stops at a station named Kisaragi. Hasumi has never heard of this place, Kisaragi, before. She wonders if she should get off the train or stay until the last stop. She drowns in utter confusion as she gets mixed advice from the users.
She finally decides to get off and look out for help at the station. To her fright, she discovers that the station is unmanned, and there is not a single soul around.
A user then asks:
“When did you get on the train.”
“I’ve gotten off the train. The station’s unmanned. I believe I got on the train at 11:40.”
She replies.
The users tried searching for Kisaragi Station on the internet but found no results.
They also realized that her train had been running for an hour which was pretty strange.
Hasumi posts:
“I’m looking for a schedule so I can get back, but I can’t find one. The train is still stopped, so it’d probably be safest to get back on….”
ALONE AND STRANDED
While she writes this, the train starts to leave.
Hasumi then starts looking for a taxi from the station.
But it’s really questionable if she has any luck finding a cab at an unmanned station, a user doubts.
“There don’t seem to be any taxis anywhere. Hmm…”
Hasumi updates.
The users insist she calls 110 (the number for police) or looks up the taxi company in the phonebook at a telephone booth nearby. Hasumi calls her parents and asks to be picked up, but neither of her parents seems to know where Kisaragi Station is.
“… They’ll look for it on the maps so they can come get me, but I’m getting a little scared now.”
She says.
KISARAGI MEANS DEMON
A user then asks Hasumi if she was the only one who got off the train. She replies, no one else got off, and she is all alone now. Another user assumes, Hasumi was somewhere around Shin-Hamamatsu, but Hasumi assures that the place is definitely called Kisaragi. One of the users reveals that in Japanese Kanji, “Kisaragi” also means Demon.
At this point, Hasumi, along with other users, gets horrified. A user advises Hasumi to walk back along the tracks, as it might be possible that she could at least reach the place where she came from. Hasumi follows the advice and starts walking back along the tracks.
Walking back along the tracks for some time, Hasumi updates the users that she hasn’t yet seen any house or building at the place. It is all grass and mountains around.
Moments later, Hasumi posts:
“I got a call from my father, and he had many questions, but simply couldn’t find my location. I’ve been told to call 110, which I’m a little opposed to doing, but I’ll try asking them to help me now.”
Hasumi finally decides to call 110 and asks for help. But even after explaining to them for quite some time, unfortunately, the police believe that Hasumi is just messing around with them, and instead, they start scolding Hasumi for it. A user urges Hasumi to wait until daylight before she does anything.
SOUNDS OF A BEATING DRUM
Suddenly, Hasumi starts hearing some weird noises from a distance and isn’t sure where it is coming from,
she posts:
“I hear what sounds like a beating drum mixed with some kind of bell way off in the distance. Honestly, I have no idea what to do at this point.”
THE ONE-LEGGED MAN
Most of the users insisted that she go back to the station and wait until the first train of the day.
All of a sudden, someone behind Hasumi yells,
“Hey! Don’t walk on the track, that’s dangerous!”
Hasumi with immense panic posts:
“…I looked around expecting to see an attendant, and saw a one-legged old man, but he vanished. I think I’m too scared to move.”
A user exhorts Hasumi not to look back and run towards the sound that is expected from a group of people nearby. Hasumi raced towards the direction of the sound.
While running, she stumbles, hurts herself on her heel, and bleeds. Hasumi immediately calls her parents. Her dad informs her that he is calling the police, but Hasumi is still afraid as the sound keeps getting closer.
THE ESCAPE
Hasumi somehow manages to reach the tunnel, and now she decides to enter into the tunnel with the hope that the sound approaching from behind her is not that of a train.
Minutes later, Hasumi posts:
“I finally managed to make it to the front of the tunnel. The name says Isanuki. The sound’s still getting closer, so I’m going to leave the tunnel. If I’m safe once I get out of the tunnel, I’ll post again.”
As she leaves the tunnel, she notices there is someone up ahead. She was pleased to find a human in this ghostly town and thanked the users for their help and advice.
She says:
“…My face is such a mess from tears, he might just mistake me for a monster.”
A user suspects a person that appears out of nowhere, this late at night and that too at a place like this, might not be a good idea to approach him.
Hasumi replies:
“He seems gentle, and was worried for me. He called for a train to take me to the nearest station. Apparently there’s some kind of business hotel there. I’m truly, truly thankful to all of you.”
A user asks Hasumi to acknowledge the driver’s name and location. Hasumi questions the driver about it. The driver gives her an unlikely reply with “Hina” and nothing else. The driver does not even reveal his name. Hasumi assumes that the driver might not understand her language. The driver keeps muttering in some different language.
DRIVER IS TAKING HER BACK TO THE STATION
Hasumi is left astonished as she realizes that the driver is taking her back to the creepy station while she notices the same grasses and mountains she had crossed a few minutes ago. Most of the users constrain her to get rid of the car as soon as possible.
Hasumi in intense distress posts:
“My battery’s almost run out. Things are getting strange, so I think I’m going to make a run for it. He’s been talking to himself about bizarre things for a while now. To prepare for just the right time, I’m going to make this my last post for now.”
Hasumi was never heard from again…
Hasumi leaves everyone on this thread in monumental anxiety. Hasumi’s tragedy ends up being ‘A Real Japanese Legend.’
What happened with Hasumi later on? Who was that driver? Was Hasumi even safe? What was Kisaragi Station? Did it even exist or…
The answers to such questions will probably never be revealed. The strange thing was that the 2channel users weren’t even sure that the so-called user “Hasumi,” the one who was talking to them constantly throughout that whole time, was even real or not? None of the users considered asking Hasumi for her parents’ details as the situation was distressing.
As this incident started gaining fame, netizens came out with the three most common theories.
THE FIRST THEORY
“Hasumi” never even existed in reality and it was just a prank done by a person. And due to the fear of serious action by the police or any officials, the person deleted the account. As a result, it became impossible for anyone to trace the person behind “Hasumi.”
THE SECOND THEORY
Hasumi unintentionally became a part of a Curse as she entered the ‘Station of Demons’ or ‘Kisaragi Station’ as it translates to. She never found a single soul or any building because it was a world of Demons. The one-legged man she encountered while walking back along the tracks was a Ghost. The driver, who was a ghost, brought Hasumi back to the Demon world as she crossed the tunnel and was getting away from the Demon. The theory then concludes that the Demon killed Hasumi.
THE THIRD THEORY
Hasumi had taken the wrong train, and it was the station’s last train to leave and dropped off Hasumi at a station located in a rural area, and she misread the name of the station as ‘Kisaragi’ instead of something else. Hasumi had stated this herself, that the driver could not understand her language and there were grasses and mountains all around, which means she was just in the outskirts.
During almost 17 years since this story caught its attention, the story might have undertaken so many changes by the people from various parts of the world. It has become challenging to find out the actual story of this incident, and the actual incident might not be as scary as it sounds now.
What are your theories on this incident? Which theory do you believe in?
