“A free dive into the pit of guilt
She wishes she could reach its end
And crash onto cold concrete
She wants her body destroyed
And her soul freed
But in this endless void
All she can do is plead”
This is a poem I recently wrote, unconsciously inspired by a book I read last summer: “We Were Liars”. This is the kind of long-lasting effect this book has on a reader.
Its story simply cannot be forgotten.
“We Were Liars” is the type of book that, the very moment you finish reading the last words, makes you want to start from chapter one and go through it all over again.
It is tragic. Hauntingly beautiful. After finishing it, I just could not stop thinking about the book’s poignant story, how amazingly the author balanced the protagonist’s intense, overwhelming emotions and her moments of total numbness and emotional detachment, and of course, the final plot twist that will leave your jaw hanging and your heart racing.
But before diving into it, know this: you cannot trust the author or the narrator of the story. At moments, you won’t know if you’re reading lies or truths…but aren’t the best lies based on truths?
If you think you have a clue, if you think you’ve resolved the mystery, if you think you know what is going on…well, no you don’t.
But when it all clears out when that mist of confusion and doubt finally fades away, then your heart might skip a beat and your eyes might let a tear spill.
“Read it, and if anyone asks you how it ends, just lie”
