Have you ever imagined meeting your family members or your friends but in a virtual 3D world that is created artificially?

Well, that imagination might have just became a reality through the METAVERSE!

WHAT DOES METAVERSE MEAN?

METAVERSE is made up of two words meta and verse. The word meta is derived from Greek which basically means beyond and the ‘verse’ comes from the word universe so the METAVERSE essentially means beyond this universe. This word is used to refer to an artificial world. The internet can also be called a well-defined universe but when you surf the internet through your mobile and computer, it is limited to 2Dimensions whereas the metaverse is a world without limits!

You can do whatever you want with the help of a virtual reality box from traveling to gaming, meeting with your friends and family literally, anything in 3Dimensions while sitting on your couch!

For example, when you watch a movie in METAVERSE you wouldn’t be watching the movie merely as a viewer you would experience being in the movie!

METAVERSE is an internet that you are not just looking at through a screen but one you are actually inside of. 

WHEN WAS THE WORD METAVERSE FIRST USED?

The word METAVERSE was first used in the year 1992 in a science fiction book SNOW CRASH which was written by Neal Stephenson.

In this novel, he talked about a dystopian world, a world where real-life outdoors wasn’t livable anymore due to which everyone lives confined to their rooms, and inside of a virtual world.

WHY IS IT GETTING SO POPULAR?

Recently, many companies have tried to create their virtual worlds but the word METAVERSE was made popular again by Facebook.

When Facebook said that they are going to change the name of their company to meta, this is what Mark Zuckerberg said: 

“You are going to be able to do almost anything you can imagine like getting together with friends and family, working, learning, playing, shopping, creating as well as entirely new categories that don’t really fit how we think about computers and phones today.”

IS METAVERSE GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL?

No one can predict the future so it becomes impossible to tell whether Facebook METAVERSE will succeed or not but if we look at the facts it looks like it won’t make it.

Looking back at technologies like Google Glass which became popular in 2014 but eventually were a complete disaster.

The major reason why Google Glass was a flop was because they didn’t add any feature that distinguished it from what could already be done by smartphones.

Same goes for the METAVERSE. Yes, having 3D meetings is very cool but really why would you go through so much trouble when you can simply have a conference call with your friends and office colleagues. .

We can’t say whether METAVERSE will succeed or not, but surely it will be interesting!
