On 15th October 2021, in the early morning hours, police reported that a man was murdered at the farmer’s protest site.
The corpse was of a 35-year-old, daily wage laborer, Lakhbir Singh. On Tuesday, he was last seen in his village, Cheema Kalan, as per the resident villagers. The family and head of the town said that he was not involved in the protest. After the protests began, this was his first visit to Singhu.
Lakhbir Singh, a Dalit man, was brutally killed, and his body was discovered at the Singhu Border. His post mortem report said he had 37 injury marks and died due to excessive bleeding after suffering from a hemorrhage and shock. His right foot and left hand were cut off and were tied to a metal barricade. Even a video went viral, where it was seen that the victim was lying in the pool of blood, hand and leg chopped off and recorded the Nihangs saying that he was being punished as he desecrated a holy book of Sikhs.
They interrogated him while the victim was pleading before them. 4 Nihangs are booked in the case. Sarbjeet Singh, arrested on Friday, admitted that he chopped off the wrist. Narayan Singh, who surrendered on Saturday, said that he chopped off the leg. Bhagwat Singh and Govind Singh tied him to the metal barricade. “Lakhbir Singh’s hand was chopped off before, so I mutilated his leg. 30-45 minutes later, he died. I have no regrets because he has disrespected Guru Granth Sahib,” accused confessing to police.
The victim’s family questioned their claims of sacrilege and demanded a high-level probe.
“Narayan Singh told the court that he and the other three accused had committed the murder over the desecration of the holy Sikh scripture. They told the court that the man had committed a mistake, and they punished him,” Virender Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Law and Order, Sonipat.
