Do you think you know everything about your smartphone?
There are more than 5.11 billion smartphone users globally. This counts to be around 65% of the world population. Although many of us are practically tethered to our phones, we know surprisingly little about them. And many of the things we think we know about them are just myths.
More new smartphone users lead to more myths.
Not only the new users, but I have seen regular users having some myths. So here, Let’s debunk them one by one.
1) More Megapixels Equals a Better Picture?
What’s a megapixel?
It’s one million pixels. As such, a camera with an intent of 12 megapixels can capture an image made up of 12 million pixels. Megapixels are not the only components in any camera.
Many people – including smartphone manufacturers – talk of megapixels as the primary indicator of how good a camera is. However, these days, pixel quality is far more critical. Picture quality is dependent on too many things like – sensors, apertures, lenses, software, image stabilizers, processing, etc. A 12-megapixel camera with high-quality pixels will take better photos than a 15-megapixel camera with low-quality pixels.
This is the reason why Apple and Google give better picture quality with their 12 MP cameras. Meanwhile, Chinese smartphone brands are still struggling with their 108 MP cameras.
So, next time you go phone shopping, more megapixels don’t necessarily mean better photos.
2) Smartphones Emit Harmful Radiation
Smartphones radiate harmful radiations that cause cancer
Ever since mobile phones were first brought to market, people have worried that the radiation they emit is harmful – causing cancer and other nasty diseases.
This is the most common misconception that has been widely circulated over the Internet. But a little understanding goes a long way.
“There is currently no consistent evidence that non-ionizing radiation increases cancer risk in humans.” an official statement by National Cancer Institute.
I have linked the report so that you can check it out.
Electromagnetic radiation of the frequency that mobile phones emit is entirely safe.
Indeed, more than 25,000 articles have been written on the effect of electromagnetic radiation on humans.
3) Charging Your Battery Overnight Will Damage Your Phone
Smartphones are called “smart” for a reason.
This is another myth that came from WhatsApp University. Today’s devices are so smart that they know when to stop charging – and will stop automatically when they reach that point.
So, while it’s true that a few years ago, but now it is completely safe to charge your smartphone overnight because they are smart enough to prevent overcharging.
It’s worth remembering that all mobile phone batteries are in a state of constant decay – so none will last forever.
However, if you are busy all through the day to charge a smartphone, plug it at night when you are asleep. No worries.
4) Airplane Mode Charges Your Mobile Phone Faster
“If you want to charge your phone as quickly as possible, always put it in Airplane mode before plugging in your charger”.
Once again, this is theoretical and does not work in a practical world.
Yes, aeroplane mode disconnects you from all the wireless signals and hence saving battery. This ensures faster charging.
But when? In theories and books.
Practically, the difference is so less that you would rather prefer charging with the connectivity.
5) Don’t Use Your Smartphone While It’s Charging.
The myth that you shouldn’t use your smartphone when charging is that many people would like to see it refuted.
Thankfully, that’s precisely the case. While some electronic devices are unsafe to use while charging (which is probably how this myth started), smartphones are not one of them. Of course, if you use your phone while it’s charging, it will take longer to reach the full battery, but it won’t harm either you or your phone.
So, what are you waiting for? Share this article to THAT friend who spits out all those baseless facts, and be confident because YOU are now equipped with SOLID FACTS!
Until next time, keep rocking yall!
