If you are a coffee head like me, then you MUST have heard some of these myths. And needless to say , by definition, myths aren’t always true. And nothing is worse than some popular misconceptions.
So, today I am here for your rescue, and we debunk some common myths about coffee that ARENT true!
Myth 1: COFFEE WILL PREVENT/ STUNT YOUR GROWTH
Lmao, what?
More than 1 billion people worldwide drink coffee daily, including a small proportion of teens. If this is the case, do you assume that these teens will never grow tall? And what about those adults who had their first cup in their childhood, all of them aren’t tall?
There is ABSOLUTELY NO SCIENTIFIC PROOF that coffee stunts one’s growth, so just relax!
Myth 2: COFFEE DEHYRDRATES YOU
Naah, it doesn’t.
As per the U.S. National Library of Medicine, coffee has a mild diuretic effect, i.e., you may pee/visit loo more than often.
Many people think that this causes DEHYDRATION, but that’s not the actual case!
While drinking a cup of coffee, along with caffeine, you consume liquid as well. Don’t you think this liquid will balance it out?
Also, your body absorbs liquid (or water) as per the need and flushes the rest. There is NO DEHYDRATION caused due to coffee.
Myth 3: COFFEE CAN CAUSE CANCER
There are scientific studies that prove that caffeine or regular consumption of coffee and tea cannot increase the risk of having cancer.
However, drinking any liquid at temperatures over 71.11 degrees Celsius can increase the risk of Oesophageal cancer.
Myth 4: COFFEE IS HARMFUL to PREGNANT WOMEN AND FOR THOSE TRYING TO CONCEIVE
Studies do not show relations between a cup of coffee per day and birth defects or miscarriage, or premature birth. As per studies, a cup of coffee per day is safe for both, pregnant woman and her unborn child.
Also, no evidence shows any link between coffee intake and the ability to conceive.
Pregnant women should consume 200mg or less caffeine per day.
Myth 5: COFFEE AFFECTS THE HEALTH OF A CHILD
If drinks containing caffeine (soft drinks, coffee, etc.) are consumed in moderation, it has no ill effects on attention span or hypertension. Studies show that bodies of children and adults both have the same ability to process caffeine.
However, For children sensitive to caffeine, high doses may cause anxiety, irritability, or excitability.
Caffeine itself isn’t harmful, but caffeinated drinks can affect the child’s health when NOT consumed in moderation.
Myth 6: COFFEE CAN CAUSE CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES
Large-scale studies have shown that moderate consumption of coffee (or caffeine) cannot increase the risk of having any cardiovascular disease (or heart attack) or increase in cholesterol.
People sensitive to caffeine may experience a slight, temporary increase in BP and heart rate. Still, this slight rise is similar to the rise observed in everyday activities like climbing stairs, walking, etc.
For those who already have high BP or are older, it’s better to consult a doctor about the intake of coffee.
Myth 7: COFFEE AFFECTS BONE STRENGTH
Though studies suggest that coffee intake may increase calcium loss through urine, this loss is minimal. Having a healthy coffee (300mg caffeine or 2-3 cups) cannot affect bone density or calcium balance. More and more studies have confirmed the fact that coffee is not a risk factor for osteoporosis.
In fact, it is known that moderate consumption of coffee can reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, high heart rate, diabetes.
DO NOT forget coffee still have some ill effects!
Anything too extreme is never ever good for anyone, let it be food, water, coffee, or alcohol (lol). Make sure whatever you eat, whatever you drink, is in a limited quantity so that you gain its benefits and not harms!
Phew! I’m tired now, gotta go and make a cup of coffee for myself!!
